Meonstoke Font

Meonstoke font is probably the oldest artefact in the pretty church of St Andrews Meonstoke

This beautiful simple C12th font is square on a single pillar and made of Purbeck stone with a lead lining. The lead has lovely decoration of leaves and fruit and inside the remains of the fitting for the plug and chain. The banded decoration on the sides of the bowl are typical Norman arch design but have suffered some damage over the intervening 900 odd years. Vestiges of four angle shafts are clearly visible on the base.
