The Hayling Ferry 1922

This old postcard image of 1922 shows the Hayling Ferry carrying passengers

Hayling Island is separated from mainland Hampshire, with the sea completely encircling it. Before the road bridge was built the only means of reaching the mainland was by wading across the narrow northerly channel or by taking the ferry.

A small oared boat would transport people back and forth between Hayling and neighbouring Portsea Island. The ferry eventually became motorised. The ferry still trundles back and forth today.
