Old Hampshire Names

Old Hampshire Names. This is part of an ongoing project to explore, research and share, data and evidence to determine what are the old family surnames of Hampshire. Using Maps, timelines, original record and digital analysis, we want to create a resource we can all enjoy.

We are going to begin by sharing a table of names with you. They have been randomly collected, where we see them, some from documents others from churches or gleaned from old books. We will include a source and it might just help you with your Hampshire family history or other history projects. If you have any thoughts or ideas we'd be delighted to hear from you.

Old family names of Hampshire occur in all sorts of documents and as expected surname clusters can be found from the earliest of times. There are surnames that have a Hampshire place name at their root and we are particularly interested in these. We are also investigating name clusters in Hampshire such as the Earwakers in the Meon Valley. Even today many families stay amazingly local over many decades.

How old are some of these Hampshire family names?

Linguistics and the root of English names are complex, a useful starting resource for research is the BBC family history site. Do you have a surname in your family tree that you think has a long link with Hampshire? Contact us and let's see if we can all help each other.

This is a great area for crowd-sourcing data across local family and special interest history groups. We are starting to collect data on Hampshire names that crop up repeatedly, if you have any to add we would love to hear from you.
