Baptismal Font Selborne

The baptismal font Selborne has a beautiful simplicity and sits perfectly in the church of St Mary’s that drips with wonderful Hampshire history

The church was founded in Anglo Saxon times and is recorded in the Domesday book. The font is carved from the local calcareous stone which is soft to the touch and pale in colour. The font is positioned at the entrance to the church.

It is an unadorned tub shape with a stout central support on a base, the whole of which sits on an elegant circular platform. It is difficult to date because of it’s lack of ornamentation but probably is mid C12th.

The cover is recently made from the old yew tree brought down in a storm in 1990.
