The baptismal font in the church of St Mary’s Portchester is a striking example of a Norman round font
The lower arches have been faithfully restored but the upper part is as it was when carved by the hand of a Norman stonemason. It is made of Caen stone and is intricately carved with spirals of flowers, serpents and other figures. It is a baptismal font full of symbolism, yet to be fully understood. It is a one of Hampshire’s most splendid fonts.
