St Simon and St Jude Bramdean

In the ‘valley where the broom grows’, well actually not in the valley but sitting high above it, is the church of St Simon and St Jude Bramdean.

You do not glimpse it from the road but this C12th church gazes down on its community, well above the winter bourne that floods the road below in times of sustained heavy rain.

The usual C19th restorations have done their best to alter the outline of the early church but in the side walls you can see two plain C12th short lancets and a late C12th door in the nave. From the outside, strip away the transepts, remove the C15th window and wooden shuttered bell tower and the early church emerges. The magnificent Bramdean House sits alongside a farm on its other side, in all a wonderful vista.
