St Peter’s Church Ropley

This ancient church in Ropley Hampshire, sits upon a mound, above the main street of this pretty village not far from Alresford

Sometimes it seems as if some buildings glue a village together and the position of St Peter’s, raised above the other buildings in the village seems to do just that. The church, originally built in Norman times, has little left of its early structure, although the south door is from this time.

The church suffered at the hands of over enthusiastic Victorian restorers but its wooden bell tower which was added at the end of the C14th gives the church great charm.

A sad addition to this post

Today, the 19th June 2014, Ropley church suffered a major fire which has destroyed much of the lovely church of St Peter’s. The damage done to such an old building which sits at the centre of a community, is so sad for all those who have lived it, as a constant reminder of our connection with the past.
