An Old Image of Chapel St Petersfield

This early C20th image of Chapel St Petersfield, shows the drapers shop Wells and Rush

The image shows Chapel St where Lavant St joins it. The Wells and Rush building is still there and so are the abutting buildings, although modified. The large house at the end has been demolished.

Wells and Rush was still operating in Petersfield in the 1960’s. I remember inside, it had wooden and glass cabinets either side with wooden shelves on which roles of fabric were stored. At the far end was a glass topped counter with wooden stools in front. As children we would climb up onto the stools and look at the pretty handkerchiefs and brightly coloured glass bobble pins kept in drawers under the glass counter.

The painted sign is still just visible on the side of the building and reads Wells and Rush Sash Drapers and Milliners.
